In the immediate aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), led by an independent academic research board, launched a $500 million mission to study the effect of oil spills on the environment and public health.
In terms of research dollars, the Gulf of Mexico has been a traditionally underfunded body of water. GoMRI’s 10-year effort changed all that. Now, as GoMRI’s charge to study oil impacts comes to a close, the Sea Grant oil spill science outreach program is hosting events in each Gulf state to celebrate GoMRI’s legacy.
